Just linking to a copy of the Boardwatch article entitled “Stopping the Flood” that was published in April 1997 about SYN flood attacks and defenses.

panix.com, the first ISP in New York, was by that time a customer of netaxs.com (the first ISP in Philadelphia, that I founded). Unfortunately they were also one the target of one of the first SYN flood attacks, so Alexis and I wound up running filters on AGS+s and watching as the attackers evolved, until eventually syn cookie code was the first good answer. Even on those old slow machines…
